DEFINITION
Anarchy
lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence
of governmental authority
Commonwealth
a nation or other political entity founded on law and
united by a compact of the people for the common
good
Communism
a system of government in which the state plans and
controls the economy; all goods are shared equally
with the aim of a classless society
Constitution
a government operating under an authoritative
document (a constitution) that sets out the laws and
principles that determine the nature, functions and
limits of the government
Democracy
a form of government in which the supreme power is
retained by the people, usually through a system of
representation like a parliament or senate
Dictatorship
a form of government in which a ruler wields absolute
power (not restricted by a constitution or laws); the
citizens do not possess the right to choose their own
leaders
Federalism
a form of government in which power is divided
between a central authority and a number of
constituent regions
Monarchy
a government in which the power is in the hands of a
monarch (king or queen) who reigns by hereditary
right, usually for life
Parliamentary democracy
a political system in which the parliament elects the
government and a prime minister or premier
according to party strength as expressed in elections
Parliamentary monarchy
a state headed by a monarch who rules in ceremonial
capacity; true governmental leadership is carried out
by a cabinet and its head - who are drawn from a
legislature (parliament)
Socialism
a theory or system that advocates the vesting of
ownership and control into the community as a whole
Theocracy
a form of government in which a god is recognised as
the supreme civil ruler, and laws are interpreted by
religious authorities (bishops, mullahs, etc.)
Totalitarian
a government that seeks to subordinate the individual
by controlling all political and economic matters
including the attitudes and beliefs of its population
