Kathleen Goodwin

Chief Mechanical Engineer
Kathleen was the second woman to be elected a Member of
the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Kathleen undertook
an apprenticeship with a general engineering 昀椀rm before
specialising in planning and production including reorganising
factories during the Second World War. Post-war, Kathleen set
up several engineering 昀椀rms, was the patentee for a hospital
bed and was a President of the Women’s Engineering Society.
Her 1955 application to become an Associate Member was
proposed by Verena Holmes. Dame Caroline Haslett, cofounder of the Electrical Association for Women, acted as one
of the application referees. Kathleen later became a Fellow of
the Institution.
