Joan Shawe
FIMechE CEng (1926-2015)
Development Engineer
Joan attended Newnham College, Cambridge where she completed
a degree course in the Mechanical Sciences at a time where women
at Cambridge University were not yet permitted to receive their
degree at a ceremony. Joan also gained an MSc in Mathematics at
the Chelsea Polytechnic which later merged to become part of King’s
College, London.
Joan’s work as a Development Engineer included work on guided
weapons speci昀椀cally looking at the initiation and development of
hydraulic servo components.
Joan joined the Institution as a Student Member later transferring to
become a Graduate Member, an Associate Member and a Fellow.
In 1976 Joan became a member of Council. Institution records
suggest that she was the 昀椀rst woman to sit on the IMechE Council.
