mountain, rising 3 miles up out of the surrounding game-filled plains.
Uhuru peak stands at 5895m and its name is the Swahili word for
freedom. Trekkers experience everything from tropical rainforest and savannah
grasslands through to alpine woodland and moorland, culminating with snow

MACHAME
ROUTE
MACHAME ROUTE
Day 2
Drive to Machame Gate for registration and
to start your trek! Today’s hike takes around
6hrs mostly in rainforest. Kibo peak can
just be seen from the campsite. Overnight
at Machame Camp, altitude 2850m.
Day 3
A gentle climb through moorland leads
us to the ridge of a valley. Following the
rocky path, the Shira plateau comes into
sight with spectacular views. Today’s hike
takes about 4-5 hours. You may have time
to explore the plateau as your cook makes
We use a small but highly respected operator for our Kili Climbs. Based in Arusha in
Tanzania, they are fully insured and treat their guides, porters and cooks fairly.
Guides are skilled and knowledgeable and have vast experience in leading Kilimanjaro
treks with a focus on safety and getting the best from your once in a lifetime trek.

Day 4
A 6 hour hike past the Lava towers
at 4600mtrs. Descend to Barranco
Hut where we rest, enjoy dinner and
spend the night. Very important day for
acclimatization as we overnight at around
the same altitude as day 3. Overnight
Barranco Hut, altitude 3900m.
Marangu
Gate
Day 7
Ascent day! It is a cold and steep
hike of around 6 hours to Uhuru
Peak, the highest point of Africa at
5895m. Depending on your ability
and pace, we will see the sunrise
from the summit. Descent begins
with a 5 hour hike making a long but
exhilarating day. Overnight Mweka
Hut, altitude 3100m.
Day 5
Continue on a steep ridge climbing the
Barranco Wall to Karanga Valley. After
lunch at camp we can take shorter hikes
for great views of the summit. Overnight
Karanga Camp, altitude 4000m.
Day 8
Our last day on the mountain.
4 hours hiking down to Mweka Park
Gate where you will be presented
with your certificate! Transfer
to Moshi.
Day 6
About 4 hours hiking with some steep
valleys en route to Barafu Camp from
where you make your final ascent at
midnight. Time to walk around the rocky
ridge for spectacular views, weather
permitting! Overnight Barafu Camp,
altitude 4600m.
Day 9
Your trip ends. Shuttle transfers to
Nairobi are readily available if your
Overland trip starts tomorrow.
