Weeks 1 to 3
COLOMBIA – Cartagena - fantastic
UNESCO city. Visit Volcan de Lodo El
Totumo to experience volcanic mud,
before reaching the beach at Taganga.
Tayrona National Park for snorkelling
and beach time. Medellin - salsa lessons
and museums. Explore the wax palms in
Salento and the coffee farms of Parque
Cocora Valley. Bogota - trek to Cerro de
Monserrate, explore La Candelaria and
try cheese with hot chocolate! Camp in
Tatacoa Desert, then take to the walking
trails in Parque Purace. Popayan beautiful
colonial city.
Weeks 4 to 6 (Weeks 13 to 15)
ECUADOR - Depart Quito and cross the
Equator. Otavalo - bustling market town.
Amazon Jungle - 3 nights in the jungle.
Banos - canyoning, mountain biking or hike
the mountain trails. Cuenca - UNESCO
World Heritage site. Peru - Pacific Ocean
coast and beach camping. Chan Chan and
Temple of the Sun and Moon. Huaraz and
the Cordillera Blanca (road conditions
permitting). Lima - Peru’s capital.
Those on the 12½ week trip start/finish
here in Lima.
Ballestas Islands - exotic and rare
marine wildlife. Ica Desert and Oasis of
Huacachina. Optional dune buggies and
sandboarding in the desert and sleep out
under the stars.
Weeks 7 to 9 (Weeks 10 to 12)
Nazca Lines - huge figures carved
into the desert. Chauchilla Cemetery
- ancient tombs. Arequipa - a
magnificent colonial city and great
Peruvian nightlife. Colca Canyon - view
the majestic condors. Cusco and
Sacred Valley of the Incas. 4 day Inca
Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Puno and
Lake Titicaca - visit the floating reed
islands and spend a night with a local
family. BOLIVIA - La Paz - explore the
local street markets! High Altiplano drive through this barren landscape.
Potosi - option to enter a working silver
and tin mine.
Weeks 10 & 11 (Weeks 8 & 9)
Uyuni Salt Lake - excursion out onto
the vast salt flats. ARGENTINA - Salta
- a relaxed colonial city. Cafayate and
Mendoza - visit wineries by bicycle
and paraglide from the Andes. CHILE
- Santiago, the modern, vibrant capital.
Weeks 12 to 15 (Weeks 4 to 7)
Pucon - Chile’s Lake District.
Villarrica Volcano - climb this
volcano. ARGENTINA - Bariloche
- winter ski resort with great hiking
trails in summer. Carretera Austral
(when passable) - volcanoes, glaciers
and fjords - white-water rafting. Los
Glaciares National Park - largest
glacier in the world. Perito Moreno
Glacier - boat ride to this 200ft high
glacier. Torres del Paine National
Park - option to hike the W-Trek.
Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia the world’s most southerly city.
Patagonia - vast treeless plateau.
Puerto Madryn - Valdes Peninsula,
swim with sea lions.
