Interview with David Durham, President, Energy Systems, and

“Westinghouse is a full-service provider of
nuclear technologies, fuels and services,” says
David Durham, President, Energy Systems
at Westinghouse, when asked to sum up his
company’s position in the nuclear industry.
“For countries or regions that need large
baseload sources of electricity, our AP1000
is the safest reactor in the world. It is also
the most efficient operating reactor in
the world, as we have seen with our four
operating plants in China. They are setting
performance records for the entire Chinese
fleet and, in some cases, for the global fleet.”
Faced with the intermittent nature of
renewable sources of energy, countries
around the world are increasingly
acknowledging that they will need a low-cost,
stable supply of electricity if they are to have
any hope of achieving their net zero targets. In
that context, and for other reasons,

as David explains, nuclear power becomes a
very attractive option.
“We are seeing strong interest in the AP1000
from central and eastern Europe, in particular,
but also south-east Asia,” he says. “At the
same time, we are completing our two units in
the US at Vogtle and the first of those should
be operational this year.
