Participants will learn about the key
identification features of UK mammals
(excluding bats) by using museum
specimens, small-mammal trapping,
and field signs, such as droppings and
footprints. Other topics covered will
include the resources and field guides
available for identification, legislation
and surveys, features of good habitats
for mammals, and how management
can benefit populations.

cover indicator species, the National
Vegetation Classification (NVC)
framework, vegetation analysis
computer programmes, plant

During this course a range of survey
methods will be covered and there
will be practical demonstrations of
capture techniques, acoustic lures
and bat identification in the hand.
Radio-tracking, acoustic monitoring
and identification from sonograms will
also be covered, and other topics will
include the importance of woodland
habitats for bat conservation and how
to run surveys and collect data.

With a focus on vegetative features,
rather than flowering features,
attendees will practise identifying
common grass species in a variety
of habitats, including base-rich
woodland, calcareous grassland and
acid heathland. This course is aimed
at students, ecological consultants
or rangers – anyone who needs
to undertake botanical surveys.
Knowledge of flowering parts and key
terminology is required, and previous
experience of using keys to identify
plants would be useful.
