Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading. And yet common
misconceptions about the nature of reading comprehension often undermine
the teaching of reading, reducing it to the counterproductive rehearsal of a
small set of illusory skills. A better understanding of comprehension - and its
links to word recognition and reading fluency - can transform teaching into
something more meaningful and enjoyable for pupils and teachers.
The ability to read fluently is central to literacy development. In this
session, you will learn about the nature of reading fluency, how it can
be nurtured in the classroom and how it can be assessed as part of a
systematic approach to addressing barriers to reading development.
