What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 9
Being a CEO is a bit like conducting an orchestra; professional colleagues,
politicians and stakeholders look for leadership, support and direction. For
me being curious about people, understanding my context and the political
constraints and trying to work with and through my team feels like the only
way to navigate this. I try to be conscious of all of the lenses on what we do and
to provide strategic and practical perspectives whilst being myself and seeking
to bring humour and humanity to the serious work that we do.

I’d describe myself as a ‘charity careerist’ having fallen into the sector and got
hooked, then progressing gradually to a CEO role. Charity was always in my
DNA but I never expected or planned for it to be a career path. Leadership
requires all of your skills – bravery, empathy, compassion, resilience, tenacity,
tough decisions, deciding which persona is needed in each circumstance,
knowing what you can’t or shouldn’t be doing and when others can do better
than you.

For me, leadership is about taking
organisations to places they would
otherwise not have gone.
