Between your words…
Thank you for sending us over 100 entries. As a group, you present as controlled,
ambitious and keen to share experience. You’re idealistic, bold, ready to take on
whatever the job throws at you. You’re good humoured and have a brilliant sense
of perspective – and a formidable sense of duty. Yet we also know that what will be
printed in such a public document can never be the full story – in fact, few of you
really gave a sense of how you actually feel in your jobs. Through our work with chief
executives every day at Star昀椀sh, we’re party to the realities of your lives running
complex organisations – the highs and the lows; the triumphs and the frustrations.
The skills that great CEOs need are de昀椀nitely changing. We see evidence of this
every day. They’re changing because you as leaders are increasingly working in
exposed conditions, sometimes with heightened public mood and often with rising
expectations. Your world is one characterised by rapid digital clock speed: news
travels fast. You’re updating everything so you can address bigger needs in bigger,
more diverse communities. And now you’re leading teams in which contrasting ideals
and expectations have to be recognised; some of you are adapting, as you move from
one CEO role to the next, your own leadership behaviours to be e昀昀ective in 昀氀atter
organisational cultures. Today’s leaders should be celebrated – for their strength,
for their clear sightedness, and for the inspirational driving force they represent.
Today’s CEOs show everyone the huge opportunity we have to create positive change.
In what can sometimes feel like the loneliest job in the world, we need to make sure
that leaders have access to the support networks that are right for them, especially
in their peer communities where shared experiences build con昀椀dence. The role and
behaviours of boards will also change: many boards have already taken steps to
ensure they are fully in touch with the pressures on their teams, and are as aware of
the substantial opportunities available to those who are brave enough to take them.
I believe that people will look back on this period in which
we are lucky enough to be leaders and we will be seen as the
generation who tackled equity, diversity and inclusion, and
the climate emergency. This is happening on our watch and
it is our challenge … It is time to change the world.
