What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 57
I believe that people will look back on this period in which we are lucky enough
to be leaders and we will be seen as the generation who tackled equity,
diversity and inclusion, and the climate emergency. This is happening on our
watch and it is our challenge … It is time to change the world.

E昀昀ective organisations have inspiring leaders at all levels. My leadership
journey started by the side of a pool working as a lifeguard for a local council.
I was always professionally curious. Throughout my career, I’ve asked myself,
and others as I got more senior, why are we doing things this way? So what
will this do to improve outcomes for residents, or improve sta昀昀 wellbeing
or motivation? I’m also realistic about what local government has lost but I
am more focused on the art of what is still possible. Councils still have many
levers and opportunities to support residents to have better lives. I’m also
an optimist. My approach has always been to energise and excite colleagues,
to enable them to thrive and believe we can always achieve more. I get great
satisfaction from supporting others to 昀氀ourish, working collaboratively and
getting things done which have a positive impact.

When I think of what leadership means to me today, I think of something that
is never 昀椀xed and forever changing it is sometimes overstated and understated
whilst being spontaneous, planned, situational and static all in a single day.
Leadership means to inspire others to work together toward a common goal.
It encourages and enables people to do their best work. Leadership is to
understand your own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of the team,
then leveraging individual strengths to compensate for individual weaknesses
whilst overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. It is recognizing that
a team is more than the sum of its parts, and that people work best when they
work together. Most important of all strong leadership means to me that vital
intangible ingredient that makes the seemingly impossible demands of Local
Government possible and allows councils to deliver for the communities they
serve.
