Being a leader can mean a lot of di昀昀erent things. It means sharing energy,
direction and pace with colleagues and partners. It means deciding to do things
and deciding not to. It means keeping things going when times are tough.
It means being a human being, while still putting the organisation’s needs
front and centre. It is sometimes about asking for help and not knowing the
answer. And continuing to learn! Ultimately, it is about working out a plan to
get your organisation where you want to go – to help make the change in the
world you want to see. Working out how to build trust, collaboration and space
to challenge, is what leadership requires to give everyone the best possible
chance to achieve shared ambition.

Leadership to me is collaborating with our workforce, audiences, visitors,
artists and partners, taking their contributions as the fuel to reach our
organisational goals. It is also about being 昀氀exible, like a tree in the storm,
being able to face the challenges in an opportunistic way, using di昀케culties as a
catalyst for change and betterment, always learning, 昀椀nding the way forward
with the strength of your roots. Knowing without a team and a common goal
there is also no such thing as a leader, so always investing in those roots and
those relationships. Creating a culture of collaboration and respect. Being more
in tune with our young, digital-昀椀rst, diverse world. Accepting that we are always
in a constant change and 昀椀nding a way to move forward while being open to
disruption.

As a CEO I have a responsibility to be forward-thinking and innovative, in small
ways, as well as in how I meet my more core CEO responsibilities, such as being
a strong ambassador for my organisation. Change is a constant – a cliché in
some ways and a truism too. What leadership means to me, therefore, is being
focused on, and interested in, people and their thoughts – and I’m always
keen to harvest ideas from everyone to make changes happen that bene昀椀t the
whole organisation. Drawing on everyone’s diversity of thinking, experience,
and skills is what makes leadership so exciting and rewarding. Seeing people
in my organisation 昀氀ourish and grow on their own leadership paths is linked to
my own personal ful昀椀lment and is very much core to the leadership journey I’m
undertaking.
