What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 53
Firstly, I am grateful to my many mentors, coaches, and people I have
worked with over many years, for their wisdom, guidance, and support. In
my view leadership is no exact science and as such is informed dynamically
by experiences and insights. Three words… Culture. The culture of any
organization is shaped by the worst behaviour the leader is willing to tolerate.
As leaders it is imperative that we role model what we want to see and address
any bad behaviours expeditiously. We should also create a culture that is
psychologically safe. Creativity. Anyone who has never made a mistake has
never tried anything new. Accepting that mistakes will happen from which one
learns enables innovation and transformation – I call this perfect imperfection.
Collaboration. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. 21st century
leaders need to focus on a whole systems approach in achieving excellence and
continuous improvement – better never stops.

My leadership journey has been an amazing privilege, with many opportunities
that have given me a rich set of experiences and destinations. I have led several
local authorities (Islington, Newham, Norfolk), Audit Commission Director,
DG for Public Service Reform in Blair’s second term. Then returning to my
birthplace in Montreal, leading the School of Social work at McGill University.
A road less travelled. Today I enjoy leading the University of London as ViceChancellor. Starting out my academic life as an international student many
years ago, I never would have predicted arriving here. I think it’s an example of
being the right leader for the right times; challenges and change facing higher
education. Education opened doors that I would never have imagined. It has
taught me to never stop learning, be curious and have the con昀椀dence to say
yes when opportunity knocks.

Environmental fragility, pandemic, cost of living, war
in Europe all of which compel us as leaders to lead in a
different way. In a trauma informed way. In an emotionally
aware way. In a flexible way. In a vulnerable way
