After holiday jobs including a petrol pump attendant, postman and factory
worker that taught me lots, my career started as a Civil Service fast stream
graduate. Working in the Department of Environment I was lucky to see the
world working on international climate change and biodiversity negotiations.
I returned to Yorkshire to establish one of the new Government’s Regional
Development Agencies. I spent 13 years with Yorkshire Forward, including
becoming CEO, and loved working in the team that made Yorkshire a better
place! In 2010 I joined Leeds City Council and as CEO have overseen the highs
of regenerating the city and building good public services with a Team Leeds
culture, and the lows of austerity and the pandemic. I’ve learnt you need to
work with people who care and 昀椀nd jobs you enjoy and are passionate about.
Don’t be afraid of setbacks, be con昀椀dent about who you are, where you come
from and what you stand for. Do your job well, work hard, and you’ll open more
opportunities. The foundations of trustworthy family and friends have given
me freedom to be myself. I love team sports and try to build strong teams
where I’m never the best player.

If I have to narrow it down then leadership is all about people and the
most important leadership skill is empathy. If you can have the capacity to
understand why people are reacting the way they are, why they are motivated
to do what they are doing, it will help you in every aspect of your leadership.
Leadership is about harnessing that understanding to create shared purpose
bound by common values. Oprah Winfrey said: “Sometimes you 昀椀nd out what
you are supposed to be doing by doing the things you are not supposed to do.”
That’s what life and leadership is all about. You won’t always get it right 昀椀rst
time, you won’t always succeed but what you must always try to do is learn and
grow from those experiences and make them and you into more than the sum
of our parts.
