I sometimes think leadership is like that Chumbawumba song: ‘I get knocked
down and I get up again…’ That’s not to say that I’ve spent my 21 years in
leadership parrying punches; indeed I’ve been supported and inspired by some
fantastic people. However, leadership is rarely a straight line, you sometimes
don’t know quite how much progress you’ve made until you’ve looked back
and stu昀昀 happens that we have to deal with and help others to deal with. My
biggest learning has been about the power of the collective, how to create that
sense of movement and momentum, and the joy of creating a team 昀椀lled with
people better than I am, who, together, are more than the sum of their parts.
I’ve also learnt that naysayers are (usually) wrong. Leadership for me now is
also not about being perfect. I make mistakes, but that’s 昀椀ne. I own them!

Kindness in leadership is very important to me and is something that I have
kept with me throughout my career. It is an ethos of leadership that we must
continue to raise the pro昀椀le of because it can be overlooked when there are
so many urgent issues. In Wigan we have been focused on compassionate
leadership and a relational model of public services for some time. I introduced
‘BeKind’ as a core behaviour for how we work in 2018 and it resonated with
colleagues and the public and that ethos has remained with us since. I really
do believe kindness has moved away from a marginal concept in leadership to
being front and centre. When we get our leadership culture right our colleagues
can truly be themselves. It supports inclusion and sta昀昀 feel they have found a
place where they belong, are happy and can really make a di昀昀erence.

To cope with a world of perma-crisis the modern
leader need to build sustainable, resilient
organisations able to cope with uncertainty,
pressure and high demand. That starts with selfmanagement and role modelling.
