What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 34
My leadership journey has been shaped by three pivotal phases. Firstly, as
the eldest in my family, I learned about responsibility from my parents. They
emphasized the importance of prioritizing responsibilities over self-interest,
including ‘presentational’ and ‘representational’ duties beyond the immediate
family sphere, marking the start of my ‘servant leadership’ journey. Secondly,
my 34-year career in the Royal Air Force solidi昀椀ed these principles. It ingrained
the ethos of prioritizing the welfare of one’s team. A leader’s role involves role
modelling, articulating goals, and creating conditions for the team’s success,
often at the expense of personal gain. Lastly, my leadership journey at Shaw
Trust Group, a complex public services provider, a昀케rmed the universality of
leadership. It highlighted the centrality of trust, envisioning potential futures,
navigating uncertainty, and making decisions amid imperfect information.
These experiences collectively shaped my leadership philosophy, emphasizing
sel昀氀essness, role modelling, and a people-centric approach to leadership.

I discovered early on in my career that I wasn’t good at being managed within
a large corporate environment. I trained as a journalist, joined the BBC, had
some incredible success, winning a BAFTA for my 昀椀rst 昀椀lm, went to Channel
4 Dispatches to do a lot of undercover and investigative documentaries. But
early in my 30s I realised I needed to run my own company. This has been
extremely rewarding, but also terrifying, tear-inducing and stressful. I wouldn’t
have done it any other way and was fortunate to have an incredible business
partner for most of the ride. Right now, I am blowing it all apart aged 57. I want
to work now on individual projects, I don’t want sta昀昀, I don’t want an o昀케ce and
I want my freedom. I have always had trouble walking through the same door
too many times, and after 14 years in my company, I no longer want to walk
through that proverbial door. I want new adventures.
