kindness, compassion, caring
A strong theme exists in your entries relating to the attitude of leaders towards the
people around them. Words such as generosity, empathy, kindness, compassion and
caring were frequent. Including references to people, collaboration and inclusivity,
almost half of all words entered were relevant to this theme. The role of modern
leader extends far beyond traditional notions of decision-making, strategy and
direction-setting. While authenticity became an over-used word, leaders talk openly in
2023 about showing their vulnerability to create connection and inspire others. With
new generations of workers signing up to missions that re昀氀ect their ideals, perhaps
the role of CEO may increasingly become one of ethical role model and visionary? Yet
leaders in 2023 also have a set of practical problems they need to solve. Whether or
not we like to admit it, society is clearly still traumatised by the pandemic. We live in
hard times as a society with rising living costs and many organisations have taken
di昀케cult decisions which have deeply a昀昀ected colleagues and workforces, as well
as client groups. Leaders are also navigating the complexities of inter-generational
workforces. Reliant on tight-knit cultures of trust and collaboration to move forward,
some are still working out how to implement these in a hybrid world. Solving new
generation issues requires a new generation approach to leadership that is altogether
softer, more emotionally intelligent and attuned to community and the needs of
others.
The world is in such flux right now, with half of
UK employees experiencing at least one symptom
of burnout, we need radical solutions to rebalance
the way we work and live.
