Julie Lilley,
Chief Executive,
Federation of Small
Businesses
My leadership journey has been one of continuous change responding to
the needs of the business and adapting to the external environment and its
demands. I am fortunate to have an excellent team of managers and sta昀昀 who
are equally willing to embrace change and improvement. Having a great team
of people is critical to carry through business plans and they should be given
every opportunity to grow and develop. I have always tried to employ the very
best people for the job and then trust and delegate to them. Leadership has
to be about equality and treating all people fairly and with respect; people
need to feel valued, cared for and listened to. Leading by example and having
high standards will undoubtedly form part of the organisation’s culture which
should also embrace openness and transparency. But ultimately leadership is
about vision and taking people with you to achieve the corporate goals.

Like many others, my journey to leadership was unplanned and has evolved
over the years. The common thread that has run through it is my commitment
to public service or, more simply put, to do meaningful work that has the ability
to have a positive impact on people’s lives. Particularly people who might
otherwise not have the opportunity, fair access, means or facility to reach their
potential. I believe that public institutions and agencies are uniquely placed
to use all the levers at our disposal to e昀昀ect those changes so what leadership
means to me, is creating an organisational environment that enables all of the
people within it to be valued and developed to do their best work in order to
create places where people can harness their strengths and live good lives.

For me, leadership centres around bringing out the best in the people you are
leading; enabling and encouraging your team to take autonomy and grow in
their roles, and in doing so, collectively drive your organisation forward. My
leadership journey so far has taught me that being a leader can be a lonely
place, and developing your resilience, con昀椀dence and capacity to deal with
stressful situations and to make tough decisions are key. But, for me, the
most important facet is being authentic to yourself and not being afraid of
letting your personality, strengths and vulnerabilities show through. Being an
authentic and transparent person that others can relate to directly translates
to building trust and respect with your team. And 昀椀nally, being gentle with
yourself and reminding yourself that the leader isn’t expected to have all the
answers all the time!
