What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 31
Not all leadership challenges are like stepping o昀昀 a 13-storey building, but
the best ones are! As a leader, you have to put yourselves in other people’s
hands. In the case of my abseil, this was the person holding the safety rope,
the person who reminded me how to pass the rope through the ‘belay’, and the
person who safely fastened me into the harness. But it was also my Executive
Team colleagues who egged each other on, my sponsors who motivated me to
take the plunge. It was the NHS sta昀昀 who inspired me to fundraise to support
them. And it was our fundraising team who organised an amazing event which
saw 350 people abseil down the building, including many grateful patients of
Guy’s & St Thomas and Evelina hospitals. I had to trust them all. If it worked,
it was much more their success than mine. I just hung around! If it had not
worked, it would have been on my head, in more ways than one! So nothing is
more important than the people you have around you. My three words could
be people, people, people. Or it could be trust them, empower them, support
them. And make sure you have some fun with them.

I believe that leadership is about empowering people to grow and develop
into leaders themselves. In my role as CEO of a multi-academy trust this is
about creating an environment for young people to feel safe and inspired
while developing sta昀昀 who can make decisions that align with the overall
vision, values and moral purpose of our organisation. As I make the move from
headteacher of one school to CEO across multiple sites, it is vital I develop
the ability to communicate our shared culture.Previously, so much of my
leadership had been about modelling the expected behaviours and being a
highly visible presence as headteacher of one school. I now need to cultivate
other ways to share our high expectations and lead the fantastic team we are
developing across multiple school sites.
