What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 30
Gary Laybourne,
Chief Executive Officer,
Coachcore Foundation
Sport was my cliché way out of a challenging upbringing. I enjoyed being a
leader and began my coaching journey at 17. Starting at the bottom of the
career ladder, I wanted to progress and make real change… until I got ‘the
top job’ and froze. “I can’t do that” and “what if I get it wrong” were common
thoughts! As a co-founder, you feel this tenfold - it’s your profession AND
passion. But I realized I was ignoring my coaching values… you can’t do
everything brilliantly and you never stop developing! I maximise my strengths
and I’m honest about my development areas. I’ve learnt: being open/
transparent unleashes amazing support from others; hiring brilliant people
who aren’t your mirror image creates true challenge/insight; every sta昀昀
member must feel valued and know how their role makes a di昀昀erence, and
culture is everything. Build it well and they not only come but stay!tay!

I’m lucky at Alzheimer’s Society to now have outstanding Directors, who need
no help to direct us to success. So, my role as CEO has morphed now into the
producer. I’m no longer needed to conduct the orchestra, I need to sell the
show, I need to know what’s coming next. The team are delivering against our
current strategy, I’m already trying to work out what the next strategy will need
to deliver. This is where reinvent comes in. Despite our phenomenal success of
late, what has got us here will not get us to where we need to be. To reinvent
and revolutionise a successful organisation is complex, the burning platform
model is easier. Therefore being clear on the right tolerance levels is vital.
When to push harder and when to let the current progress take its course.
How much change can the organisation tolerate and still deliver sustainably.
Alzheimer’s Society reputation as an incredible employer is growing but
so, therefore, are our expectations of the team – until dementia no longer
devastates lives.
