This is my 21st year as a Chief Executive. The role has changed fundamentally
over that time, becoming more demanding, pacier and more accountable. I
write this on my journey home from a particularly challenging World Scout
Jamboree in Korea, where we had to deal with signi昀椀cant risks and media
scrutiny. In many ways it’s a case study in what makes e昀昀ective leadership
today. I would highlight the following. Public engagement: the public expect
greater accountability, which means honest, clear communication. People
engagement: looking after, and listening, to your people is a must. Decisionmaking: acting decisively and courageously, with clarity of intent and sound
judgement is critical. Self-care: to cope with a world of perma-crisis the modern
leader need to build sustainable, resilient organisations able to cope with
uncertainty, pressure and high demand. That starts with self-management and
role modelling.

My leadership journey has been anything but a straightforward route from
A to B. I’ve taken what my mother would call the scenic route – starting
out not really knowing where I was heading but looking forward to the
adventure, taking a few left turns (and meeting a few dead ends) along the
way, occasionally feeling completely lost. But somehow, by following my own
north star - my personal values and my commitment to using my skills to my
best ability to make a real di昀昀erence - ending up in exactly the right place
for me, leading a fantastic organisation that exists to help other leaders be
the best they can be. And it is that circuitous route that has given me the
empathy, understanding, insight and knowledge that enables me to support
other leaders, and to support my colleagues, in their own leadership journeys. I
wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
