From ‘walking the beat’ to leading one of the UK’s largest and best loved
charities. At aged 17 I joined the Metroplitan Police Cadets. No university
education (that was to come later). One of only two young woman in my class
at Hendon and after 11 years ‘walking the beat’ I left a job that I loved because
there was no option to work part-time or to job share or even to work more
social hours. As the mother of a disabled child it wasn’t a sustainable position
to be in. Obtained an Open University Honours degree while bringing up two
children and then roles in the NHS before discovering the charity sector. There
was no career plan or leadership journey; just someone willing to work hard
who took every opportunity presented to them and who had con昀椀dence in
their abilities (often lacking in women). I found my place in the charity and
social care sectors and others trusted to me to make brave decisions aligned to
my strong personal values.

As CEO of the company, I see it as being my role to de昀椀ne the ‘What’ and the
‘Why’ of the organisation, and to build a team that can deliver the ‘When’ and
the ‘How’. Leaders must be clear on ‘what’ they are leading towards and ‘why’
they are doing so. People, teams, and organisations need a vision to work
towards (the What) and a purpose for working towards it (the why). Vision
and purpose are not only important for the people within the business, but
they are also critically important for investors and increasingly so for clients
and customers. It is then the job of a leader to build a team that can deliver
on the purpose and vision. The leader needs to assemble the best blend of
personalities, skills, and experiences, to co-create plans for delivery, and they
must then be prepared to listen to them!

I was very lucky to realise when I was quite young that I had no particular
outstanding talent. So I surrounded myself with amazing friends and I taught
myself how to juggle. In 25 years of being a CEO I have continued to surround
myself with amazing people and every day is about juggling. I have become
more re昀氀ective, more self-aware and more able to deal with the invariable
challenges and pressures of being a CEO. But ultimately every day I realise even
more that leadership is all about others – bringing together brilliant people to
work as great teams and achieve inspiring goals. The ultimate goal is to lie on a
beach for a month and not be missed at all.
