My leadership journey has taken me from being the youngest in the group to
the oldest, and along the way I hope that have learnt to appreciate those who
know more than me; to remember that as a leader it is easy to race ahead in
your thinking but very dangerous not to spend the time to keep everybody else
with you; to stay curious; and the critical importance of di昀昀erent voices and
thinking styles in any team. Above all else though, what has counted the most
for me has been trying to make a di昀昀erence, and these days now also doing my
best to help others with their own leadership journeys. Looking back, although
I loved all my jobs, I also worked too hard, and I am now a good deal better at
having a balance!

My 25-year “昀椀rst career” in the civil service was shaped by learning from some
excellent leaders at all levels – individuals with diverse styles, but all skilled in
setting a vision or goal; communicating that e昀昀ectively; and motivating and
inspiring a team to deliver. Those basics are still the building blocks for my
own leadership approach, whether I’m trying to cajole my family up a hill in
the rain or take a small team in my current organisation through the long tail
of strategic and operational change. I’ve always had a strong preference for
collaborative and participative leadership, forged by early experience leading
teams of functional experts. Nowadays, there’s an even greater expectation
that leaders will create space for all voices to be heard and this supports better
decision making; the art is to delegate what you can; listen well; and know how
and when to call the big decisions.
