Vicky Browning,
Interim Chief Executive
Having been a charity chief exec for nearly 15 years, one of the most satisfying
changes I’ve witnessed in sector leadership is the shift from the hero leader
(knows it all, goes it alone) to the collaborative leader (working together,
empowering others). Personally, I try to be the sort of leader who people want
to work with, developing mutual respect with those I lead and maintaining a
sense of both fun and purpose in what we achieve together. My recent move
from permanent to interim roles has made me think about the di昀昀erent
approach you need as a temporary leader. As an interim CEO, it’s about
prioritising listening over speaking so you can quickly get under the skin of the
organisation and maximise the value of being a fresh pair of eyes and ears.

The world is a pretty challenging place to navigate right now. Multiple and
connected crises, and the next technological revolution, are creating new
demands and expectations in how we live, work and connect with each other.
In this context, one of the most valuable competencies for any leader is being
able to hold uncertainty and adapt to change. The three words I have chosen
re昀氀ect this context. Collective, because we cannot address the scale of social
and economic challenges we face on our own; future, because we need the
capacity to imagine alternatives and create space for people to make them
real; and humility, because we need the self-awareness to know when we need
to get out of the way, listen to di昀昀erent perspectives and types of knowledge,
and be committed to learning and discovering new. Six months into my role as
CEO of YoungMinds, I can honestly say I am practising this every day.
