Our night stop: Château de Chambord
The weather forecasters were right and this morning dawned bright and clear. The sea was just as blue
as we’d left it last night and the beach just as inviting, but today we had other priorities; day one of the
Carrera Riviera.
An arch had been erected on the seafront and, at 08.31
sharp, Fred Gallagher waved his drapeau Français to send
the massive La France - which had rolled off the assembly
line only five years after Lartigue’s famous glass plates had
dried - towards the clocks of Jim Smith and Graham Rood
at the first Test at the Circuit de Deauville. Here the crews
shook off any first day nervousness and lay down some
numbers on their time cards over two laps of a beautiful
and well cambered, tree lined facility.
From the helter skelter of the track it was back to the public
roads for a long, civilised, run through the beautiful Norman
countryside, famous bocage and network of minor roads.
A Passage Control in Camembert ensured everyone was on
the right road. Just beyond the clocks of Andrew Kellitt and
Audrey Rudd we were thrilled to see the townsfolk had laid
on an impressive cheese buffet for us allowing the turophiles
in our midst to enjoy several distinct varieties along with
traditional bread, pastries and other light refreshments.
