So far so good, by now the Rally was looking forward to
wrapping up another epic day with just one more section
to get through before they could relax. Alas, thanks to the
intervention of Mother Nature, this final stretch proved to
be quite a challenge. As we began the drive from Malijai
the first rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning made
themselves known and dark rain clouds closed in around
us. Very soon we met our own Waterloo as a rainstorm of
biblical proportions engulfed all but the first few cars. The
road turned to a river and, half way through this section, it
was washed away completely.
Faced with this inundation the Rally was left with no
choice but to turn on its heel and beat a retreat back to
the highway over the Col des Lèques towards the MTC at
the Musée des Citroën in Castellane. Here, we found that,
having co-driven for the French rally team for seven years,
Fred Gallagher’s employee of the month certificate still had
pride of place on the door of the canteen.
The day officially over, all that was left was for us to
get to the night halt in Tourrettes, another 65km along the
Vallon du Fil, before settling into drinks and dinner at the
Terre Blanche Hôtel.
