Pre start & Scrutineering: 4 June 2023Photos: gerardbrown.co.ukGill Cotton, Andrew Kellitt and Audrey Rudd ensuredthat the necessary paperwork and protocols were adheredto, before issuing neck danglers and route books. Soonafterwards knots of anxious looking navigators were foundin dark nooks and shady crannies poring over the pagesof instructions and notes, looking out for anything whichmight trip them up later. Down in the town square AndyInskip, Charlie Neale, Russ Smith and Jack Amies checkedthe vehicles for safety and compliance and dealt with theinevitable gremlins that tend to show up just before arally start. Bill Holroyd’s Bentley had some fuelling issues, whilst Paul and Mariella Kirkham’s tripmeter was one ofseveral minor electrical issues that needed to be put rightahead of a measured mile calibration run along the homestraight of the 1936 Deauville Grand Prix. There was then time for a relaxed lunch in one of themany superb cafes and restaurants which spilled outonto the streets of this, the closest seaside resort to Paris, before the drivers briefing and official welcome with FredGallagher and Mark Appleton. Drinks on the beach and anexcellent dinner as the sun dipped low over La Manche drewthe pre-start formalities to a close and the rally retired ata sensible hour. Tomorrow looks like it will be a busy oneand no-one wants to oversleep.Josef and Adelheid Dillier’s 1955 Jaguar XK140 Coupewww.rallytheglobe.com
