holiday vibe. On the way to Valence we had a tourist run
along the beautiful Gorges de l’Ardèche - the European
Grand Canyon - via Two Passage Controls at the Belvédère
du Serre de Tourre and La Farigoule. The roads were just
what the crews needed; cool, shady, well surfaced and with
plenty to see along the way. A cool drink at the Auberge
on the Plateau des Gras, rounded off the afternoon nicely
before we turned our attention to the night halt.
Located a few kilometres south of the 45th parallel,
Valence is often referred to as ‘the door to the Midi’ and
from Viviers the last 55km of the route ran alongside
the Rhône on some well-earned autoroute. Very soon we
found ourselves in the sanctuary of the Clos Syrah and an
impromptu “gin & tonic on the bonnet” party in the car
park. Due to this diversion the Organisers decided that
anyone late to dinner would receive no penalties at all.
