Five Tests and two Regularities were scheduled
for today and the action started right at the
front door. Along the damp misty banks of the
River Tamar the first Test ran up the access road
behind the Hotel Endsleigh.
Climbing this steep and thickly wooded ramp the crews
were kept busy with one eye on the road book, the other on
the stop watch. Any spare optics were usefully employed
avoiding the ‘bouquet’ of pheasants which lined the route
and defiantly crowed their alarm as the cars approached.
This was undeniably their territory but, thankfully, they
seemed savvy enough to give us a wide berth and, after
all 19 cars had passed by, normal roosting resumed with
barely any plumage left out of place.
Next up was the Roadford Lake Regularity and this one
did ruffle a few feathers. It was a long section demanding
great concentration as it rose and fell over sixteen tricky
miles before the clock was stopped at the finish Control by
Tony Brooks. A sometimes RtG competitor, and navigator
extraordinaire, today Tony was poacher turned gamekeeper.
The Time Control at the Made-Well Project gave the crews
a chance to take a bit of a breather - and some refreshments
- before they set off for the day’s signature sections, the
Tests around Sugworthy Circuit. North Devon Motor Club
