After studying folklore and literature at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem, Hadara was encouraged to
go to the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and was
accepted on its ceramics course. Her work focused on
performance around body image and the production
of Judaica artefacts based on words and prayers.
Returning to Bezalel, Hadara now serves as a teacher
and was the mentor for the competition. She lives as
a religious and gay woman in Jerusalem – something
she never thought possible.
Made from earthenware, the mezuzah has lettering
made from cut paper rolled into the clay and
painted with gold lustre.
In making this object, Hadara has aimed to give
a modern twist to a traditional design by using a
tribal pattern. She mainly works in blue and white
and added the gold to provide a sense of majesty to
the object. It was one of 32 designs she put forward,
which both works with the building and stands out
from the doorway. The text is a famous quote from the
Mishnah, often cited by Magen David Adom. The letter
shin is highlighted, in common with the use of this
letter on many mezuzah designs.
