DoorPosts - Flipbook - Page 44
Yaron and Beni collaborated on this project,
as they have done many times in the past.
Yaron produced the design, and Beni made
it happen.
The artist has drawn three parallels between
the mezuzah and Magen David Adom.
He compares the belief that the mezuzah
protects the occupants of the house with the
way that MDA protects the residents of Israel.
Secondly, he references Exodus 12:7 ahead of
the final plague to strike the Egyptians – the
death of their firstborn. The Children of Israel
were commanded to put lamb’s blood on their
doorposts to protect themselves. The word
used for doorpost in the Torah is mezuzah.
Finally, he takes the letter shin, which is reproduced on
his artwork and which stands for the word shomer in
this context. This means guardian and applies both to
the mezuzah and Magen David Adom.
The mezuzah is made using wood and metal, utilising a
60-year-old milling machine and a far newer laser cutter
for the letter shin. The space cut in the letter is filled with
glass. All of the materials have been chosen for their
durability. Three types of wood are used (cherry, walnut
or mahogany), two kinds of metal (aluminium or
brass), and either red glass or white glass, representing
blood or milk. Along with two sizes of casing, this gives
numerous possible combinations.
