AWA R D 2023
The 2023 Johnny Denman Award, a prestigious accolade recognising exemplary volunteer
contributions among sta昀昀, was awarded jointly to Oli Curl and Charlie Douglas. This award
honours the memory and spirit of Johnny Denman, who was one of life’s great givers.
Charlie Douglas
Associate Director,
Norfolk
Oli Curl has made significant contributions to the
Norfolk Boat charity, where she serves as
secretary. Her efforts in 2022 resulted in 140
disadvantaged and disabled youngsters in Norfolk
experiencing sailing. Now with a young family, Oli
is hoping to take on an ambassadorial role for the
charity to promote its brilliant work in the
community. The prize money for this award will
further enable the charity to enhance its positive
impact on young people’s lives.
Charlie Douglas’s involvement with Rocklands
Community Primary School and Wymondham
College Prep School has been equally impactful. As
a Governor and Treasurer at Rocklands, and as the
Communications Officer at Wymondham, her
commitment to establishing an outdoor classroom
at Wymondham College Prep School exemplifies
the meaningful community engagement the award
seeks to encourage. As a result of winning the
award, the children at Rocklands have now
received a Buddy Bench for the playground which
is somewhere that if a child feels lonely, or in need
of a playmate during break times, they can go to.
The presence of a child on this bench serves as a
signal to other students that they are seeking
companionship or support.
The Johnny Denman Award provides a fitting way
to honour Johnny’s legacy, he was a stalwart of the
company and a great character. The selection of Oli
and Charlie as the recipients of the 2023 award is a
testament to their dedication to making a
difference in their communities, aligning with the
spirit and purpose of the award.
