the death of his brother and the resulting
events that follow. He stumbles upon the
Church of Second Chances who believe
that he can only be forgiven if he atones
for his ‘sin’. This results in him dropping
out of college to raise 3 children. Tyler
writes well and manages to bring humour
into a story of grief, crushing guilt and
extreme tragedy, with the pathos and
idiosyncrasies of bringing up children. Her
characters felt completely alive and so
real so much that at times the book was
very painful to read.
For us as a group we were able to discuss
how mistakes are rarely at the hands of an
individual and that this story was clearly a
multitude of actions leading to a
catastrophic event – certainly not the
result or action of one person alone . How
can we and should we always seek
forgiveness? Can a person ‘work off’ a sin?
In the case of this book forgiveness
appears to be something that is
negotiated through the passage of time
and the acquisition of wisdom. It cannot
be assumed lightly or earned through
extreme sacrifice.
This was an absorbing and moving read
about faith, family, friends and how they
can ultimately bring you forgiveness.

When God made the earth and sky
The flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals, the fish, the
birds, the bees.
And when at last he’d finished,
Not one was quite the same,
He said I’ll walk this world of mine
And give each one a name.
And so he travelled far and wide
And everywhere he went,
A little creature followed him
Until its strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said,
“Dear Lord, there’s no name left for me!”
Kindly the Father said to him’
“I’ve left you to the end,
I’ve turned my own name back to front
And called you Dog, my friend.”
THE CHURCHYARD
Dear friends,
St. Mary’s Church is blessed with a
beautiful country churchyard. These
distinct space is significant in the lives of
the parish as a place where loved ones
can be buried or have their ashes interred
and where family, relatives and friends
can return to remember, in peace and
tranquillity, those special people they
knew.
The care and management of the
churchyards rests with the Vicar, the
Churchwardens and the respective Church
Councils. Largely the maintenance, the
grass mowing, strimming of the
wildflower areas (done only at certain
