GWI water reuse market data
Our historical data for the reuse market is based on our inventory of projects, which includes utility wastewater treatment plants where
some or all of their outflow is used for beneficial purposes. This data has previously been published in the report Municipal Water Reuse
Markets 2010 and updated for the report Desalination & Reuse 2016. To build this inventory, we have used the most comprehensive sources
of data that are available.
For reuse projects that use desalination technology, we have used the GWI/IDA Worldwide Desalting Inventory, which is compiled
from references submitted by EPC contractors, equipment suppliers, and consultants, and aims to be a complete record of every
desalination plant with a capacity greater than 500 m³/d. The latest edition of this data is featured in the desalination market profile in
this publication.
The most timely information comes from projects that are included in GWI’s Reuse Tracker, which covers projects of interest to major
international players and those that are privately financed. For certain countries, we have cross-checked this data with external databases
of reuse projects, and national level databases of treatment plants that indicate whether a particular plant treats water for reuse. To check
the level of coverage in this inventory, we have collected aggregated data describing total reuse capacity and volumes of wastewater
reused in each country. Where there were significant gaps in coverage, we have made assumptions to estimate the total volume of reuse
capacity in the country.
