3 | Benefits of registering
As well as participating in shaping the affairs of your community and country through the
democratic process, registering to vote has a number of benefits you may not have known
about:
It improves your credit score and can make it easier to get a loan, mortgage or mobile
phone contract.
Once you are 18 you can take part in jury duty – you have to be registered to be invited.
You need to fill in less paperwork when doing things like applying to rent a house, getting
insurance, applying for a passport or buying certain things online. This is because credit
reference agencies, landlords and insurance brokers can verify your name and home
address against the electoral register if you are registered to vote.
