Pro bono
We consistently challenge ourselves to focus our time, skills, and resources to create pro
bono practice which is world leading. With a focus on access to justice and the rule of law,
we have a long tradition of supporting ground-breaking social developments. We advise
brave and pioneering individuals and non-profits, and through our HL Business and Social
Enterprise (HL BaSE) practice we act for innovators and entrepreneurs in the impact
economy. Our commitment to pro bono is a strategic priority for the firm and in 2020 we
appointed an International Pro Bono Partner, the first appointment of its kind in Europe.
Our strategic themes guide our actions which are
underpinned by an emphasis on UN Sustainable
Development Goal 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong
Institutions.
As a firm we have a long track record in opposing
racism so the brutal killing Minneapolis which
was the latest in a series of similar tragedies in the
United States, served to reinforce our commitments
to address racial injustice. In 2020, we pledged to
provide 65,000 pro bono hours in three primary
areas :

Criminal justice
•
Housing and economic justice
•
Voting rights
We have seconded a partner to work pro bono with
prosecutors seeking to hold to account the law
enforcement the death of George Floyd.
We are working with the UN Rapporteur on
Contemporary Forms to Discrimination to review
and proposed policy recommendations across
Members States relating to the accountability of
law enforcement and transparency of processes to
address the use of force.
As importantly, we are taking steps to address he
economic disadvantage experienced by black and
minority entrepreneurs . Through our HL BaSE
program we have a program to capacity build Blackled business partnering with leading organizations
in the sector. Our aim is to increase the investible
opportunities for Impact Economy investors with a
focus on Black and minority entrepreneurs. You can
