Naturally formidable mangroves provide an array
of benefits to the Bahama Islands, inclusive of
coastal protection, carbon sequestration, food
security and serving as a habitat for seventy
percent of marine life, worldwide.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Dorian (2019) ravaged
the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco
decimating a significant percentage of each
isle’s mangrove forest, thus negatively impacting
coastal development and the biodiverse
ecosystems it provides for numerous marine
species (inclusive of grouper, crawfish and conch,
which are staples in the Bahamas’ fisheries
industry.)
In an effort to restore this vital ecosystem, the
Waterkeepers Bahamas Team and Waterkeepers
Alliance were pleased to have the partnership
and support of the Bahamas Mangrove Alliance,
Bahamas Protected Areas Fund, Blue Action Lab,
