Armillaries
Armillaries
Made by hand for Chilstone in
England, our range of armillary
spheres are accurate for use within
the UK mainland. Overseas clients
must provide the GPS position of
their property.
The arrow is called the Gnomon,
which in ancient Greek means to
‘indicate’ or to ‘know’, and needs
to point directly at Polaris, the
North Star.
Armillaries work best on larger
plinths. For example, our Ecliptic
armillary would suit a mediumsized column, such as our C2400
French round pedestal.

Some points to consider
when choosing a sundial:
A circular sundial plate will work
well on a square or round top,
or on a capital.
A square plate or hexagonal
plate works best with a square
top.
Always site your sundial away
from shade, sun is its raison
d’etre.
To be accurate, the plate must
be completely horizontal.
Scientific sundials often have
the ‘equation of time’ engraved
on them, for use in the accurate
telling of time.
To set up a Chilstone sundial,
you will need a firm, horizontal
base, a compass, a non-shady
location and a sunny day.
