Kent Equality Cohesion Council is based
in Gravesham but work across Kent with
both voluntary and statutory sector partners
to promote community cohesion and to
eliminate discrimination. They provide free,
confidential advice and support to victims of
hate crime and those who suffer discrimination
in the workplace, place of study or in their
local neighbourhood. They organise regular
community events working with diverse communities
and faith organisations which at their core celebrate
the values that bind us together regardless of
ethnicity and background. Since the start of the
pandemic they adapted their delivery to include
the establishment of a “Phone a Community Friend”
scheme supporting those who were lonely or
isolated. They have also delivered regular community
events online and supported organisations with
training and policy development around diversity and
inclusion as a result of the impact of the death of
George Floyd and published reports on the impact of
Covid-19 on BAME communities in Kent.

“I was grateful for the support provided by Gurvinder
and Sonia during the pandemic. I am a widow who
lives alone with Punjabi as my first language. Over
the past year I have required help and support
around issues relating to my council property and
they were able to support me. They were always on
the other end of the phone to listen and provide
reassurance when I needed it.” Mrs Kaur - Gravesham
