GRAVESHAM
Gravesham is a borough in north west Kent, situated
on the River Thames and incorporating Gravesend
and Northfleet. Thanks to the close proximity to the
river and the excellent transport links, this area has
always been popular with commuters. Gravesham
has the highest number and proportion of residents
from a Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) group
in Kent and Medway. Over 2,011 households within
Gravesham have no occupants with English as their
main language. This equates to 5% of all households
and is the highest number and proportion of all Kent

1. Activities for vulnerable children and young
people to support wellbeing, achievement, and
life chances
Gravesham has the largest % of young people in Kent
(23.8%).75 Issues of concern include the achievement gap
for those who are in receipt of Free School Meals which is
the highest level in Kent.76

The Gravesham Foodbank saw a 41% rise in patronage
from March to December 2020, with 2,064 food parcels
provided and 798 were for children. 47% of those
accessing the food bank was due to low income, with 9%
due to benefit delays.77

Gravesham has the highest percentage of young carers at
8.1% of the youth population.78 In a survey carried out by
Caring Together 78% of respondents said lockdown had
affected their mental health.79 Additionally, because of
the impact of Covid-19 on adult health, some children are
becoming carers for the first time.
