Editorial
Welcome to issue 38 of Conservation and Heritage Journal
In this issue we feature the Burrell Collection which has reopened its doors after six years of closure
and a £68.25 million refurbishment. The design of the Burrell Collection in 1983 preceded the
national regulations that introduced accessibility as a requirement for new buildings. The Burrell
Renaissance Project was therefore a one-off opportunity to address and even exceed expectations.
Also featured is the Leicester Cathedral Revealed project will complete the reordering of the
cathedral, renew all the building services, and create the new ‘Heritage Learning Centre’ (HLC).
We also cover the ‘revealed’ project of the restoration and renewing of Leicester Cathedral, so that
it can be its very best as a place of worship, heritage, pilgrimage, hospitality, learning, sanctuary and
celebration.
Exeter Cathedral embarks on its biggest building project in more than a century. The ambitious
development project is designed to secure a more sustainable future for the cathedral by attracting
more people, providing a better visitor experience, and engaging local communities.
Rochdale Town Hall was designed by the architect William Crossland who won a competition held
by the town council in 1864. It has been a much admired public building ever since and is Grade 1
listed. We are proud to feature its restoration, with contributions from FWP Ltd, who have a strong
reputation for its expertise on sensitive restoration and regeneration projects and is using all that
knowledge to help deliver the Rochdale Town Hall project. Donald Insall describe the repair and
restoration of The Great Hall Ceiling at Rochdale Town Hall,.
Szerelmey, describe One Bishopsgate Plaza a large scheme designed by PLP Architecture, that
was completed a couple of years ago. The project delivered a new 43 story tower which will home
Europe’s first Pan Pacific Hotel, private residences, retail spaces and the creation of a large new public
plaza on Bishopsgate.
