craft and contemporary solutions within this complex and significant site has improved the visitor experience whilst securing

East Midlands - The Buxton Crescent Hotel and
Thermal Spa Project nominated by The Trevor
Osborne Property Group
Sitting in the centre of Buxton, the Crescent was built
between 1780-89 by the Fifth Duke of Devonshire’s in his
plans to establish a Georgian spa town. Grade I listed; it
is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in
the country. The properties now have a sustainable future,
restored, and conserved to create an 81 bedroom luxury
spa hotel, a unique thermal mineral water spa, a visitor
experience and six shops by Buxton Crescent Ltd (a joint
venture partnership between The Trevor Osborne
Property Group and CP Holdings Ltd).

sinusoidal stone ramps either side of a central staircase to
the North Transept door provide a dignified and accessible welcome to all. Providing the dignity of equal access
by a thoughtful and innovative design, this project
demonstrates an exemplar of access standards in heritage
settings. As lead consultant, Caroe Architecture Ltd are
submitting this nomination on behalf of the whole team
who worked together to successfully complete this
project.
Judges’ comments - Lying derelict for decades, this building
which sits at the real heart of the town has been restored in a
sympathetic but also modern way to recreate a major attraction
to this Derbyshire Spa town making it a catalyst for wider town
and regional regeneration.
London - St Paul's Cathedral, Equal Access Project
nominated by Caroe Architecture Ltd
The Equal Access Project at St Paul’s Cathedral provides
step free access into Sir Christopher Wren’s iconic
building for the first time in its 300 year history; two new
Judges’ comments - This project showcased a carefully
considered design, the most significant intervention in St Pauls
Cathedral in 300 years, which provides ease of access into the
cathedral to a wider audience.
