10. Our approach to Planning & climate change
The Suffolk Coastal Local Plan (2020) vision recognises climate change is a key factor. A strategic priority is to mitigate human impact
on the environment and reduce contributions to climate change by conserving natural resources.
The Waveney Local Plan (2019) vision includes the growth of offshore renewable energy, flood risk protections and a decreased in
climate change emission per capita as people choose more sustainable methods of transport and settlements become more selfsufficient. A strategic priority is to reduce contributions to climate change and mitigate the effects and conserve natural resources.
In addition to being integral to the strategies of the plans, both Local Plans have chapters dedicated to addressing climate change
issues and include planning policies on:
Flood risk
Coastal change and erosion
Renewable and low carbon energy development
Sustainable construction
Sustainable transport
The two Local Plans are supported by the Sustainable Construction
Supplementary Planning Document (2022). It provides guidance to assist in
the interpretation and implementation of planning policies contained in the
Local Plans. Guidance is provided on:
Water efficiency and management
Energy efficiency and carbon reduction
Materials
Waste
Sitting, form and orientation
Sustainable energy and construction and the Historic Environment
Natural environment
Renewable and low carbon energy schemes
Construction methods, and
Healthy buildings and places.
The East Suffolk Cycling and Walking Strategy aims to make cycling and walking in East Suffolk more convenient and more desirable for
all ages and abilities. A Coastal Adaptation Supplement Planning Document is under development which contains guidance on the
suitability of development in coastal locations, relocation of development away from coastal locations and enabling development.
