2 CHANNEL DRAINAGE
Channel (Linear) Drain – Classification by Load Class
When purchasing channel drain it’s important to choose the appropriate load class
based on where it is to be used and the type of traffic it will be exposed to. There are
six BS EN 124:2015 categories from A15 – the least demanding – to F900 – the most
demanding. In case of any doubt between two levels, the higher one should be chosen.
A15
B125
C250
D400
E600
F900
A15 – Areas which can only be used by pedestrians and pedal cyclists
B125 – Footways, pedestrian areas and comparable areas where occasional
vehicular access is likely (such as domestic driveway thresholds), private
car parks or car parking decks
C250 – Kerbsides and non-trafficked areas of hard shoulders, car parks,
forecourts, industrial sites and similar
D400 – Road carriageways (including pedestrianised streets), hard shoulders and
parking areas for all types of road vehicles
E600 – Areas subjected to high wheel loads (e.g. forklift trucks and construction
vehicles) such as industrial estates, loading areas, ports and docksides
F900 – Areas subjected to particularly high wheel loads such as aircraft pavement
Types of Grating Design
Grating comes in a range of designs and materials. You can choose to use it
discretely or as a design statement. You should always match the load class rating of
the grating to the channel it sits on or choose a higher rated grating than the channel to
achieve the required overall load class.
Slotted
Parallel slots are designed for rapid drainage of water into the
channel. A good all-purpose option.
Heel-proof Slotted
Narrow parallel slots are designed to be too small for most
stiletto heels to penetrate. Can be a good option for use in
areas with high concentrations of pedestrians.
Heel-proof Mesh
The criss-cross pattern allows water to penetrate but is small
enough to prevent most stiletto heels from penetrating
the gaps. Can be a good option for use in areas with high
concentrations of pedestrians.
