THE MARSHAL’S OFFICE
The Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps is
a member of the Royal Household who is
responsible for certain State ceremonial
events involving Heads of Diplomatic
Missions in London and is accredited to
the Court of St James’s.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• The King’s Birthday Parade
(Trooping of the Colour)
• The King’s Evening Reception for the
Diplomatic Corps
• Royal Garden Parties
• Royal Ascot
• All major state occasions

This includes conferences, events and
ceremonial activities; diplomatic and VIP
security, including VIP facilities at Heathrow
and Gatwick Airports; government
hospitality and the Diplomatic Missions and
International Organisations Unit.
The Protocol Royal Unit leads on liaison
between the FCDO and the Royal
Households, offering advice on royal
matters and acting as the interface between
Directorates and Posts on State and all other
royal visits overseas.
The Protocol Directorate is also responsible
for publishing the London Diplomatic List
once a year which can be viewed at

appointments, privileges, immunities and
security of the Diplomatic Corps and of
International Organisations in Britain.

DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS UNIT (DMIOU):
The unit is divided into four teams with responsibility for various countries (see below). It is the first point of contact for enquiries about accreditation
of foreign staff at diplomatic missions and international organisations in the UK; privileges and immunities; claims against diplomatic missions;
offences (including parking and other traffic violations) committed by foreign diplomats; consent for diplomatic premises, diplomatic parking
bays; duty free release of vehicles and goods; refunds of VAT and duty on petrol; exemptions from council tax and national non-domestic rates;
policy questions related to the implementation of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, State Immunity, headquarters
agreements and privileges and immunities.
