another suitable location with sufficient space and facilities. No preparation is
required, or perhaps allowed.
On the day of the competition, the representatives of each practice (perhaps
two or three people) – who will be the ones to deliver the project – are given a
briefing by the client and the client’s agents. Each practice is briefed individually,
one after the other. They are then sent to separate rooms and given a period
of time, say three to four hours, to prepare sketch designs and presentation
material, following which they present their schemes. The commission is given
to the practice that best meets the criteria set out in the briefing.
Fees are negotiated subsequently.
The advantages of this method include giving the client the opportunity to meet
the individuals who will be developing the design and managing the project,
observe them working under pressure (often a requirement in a commercial
environment) and see how they are able to assimilate ideas and communicate
them clearly and to keep the amount of time taken by all to a minimum while
thoroughly addressing the process. It can also be an enjoyable and insightful
process for all involved!
This method will work best where quality is ranked very much higher than cost
and can be beneficial where the scope of the project is only loosely determined
and needs further definition.
