RIBA Client Advisers
RIBA Client Advisers are independent of the project team and
monitor and help to manage the design process from its earliest
stages. They give advice on the composition and selection of
the project team and provide independent advice to help the
client run the project efficiently and achieve best value and
quality. Their work might include:
• strategic decision-making
• stakeholder consultation
• design brief development
• budget-setting
• feasibility studies
• procurement procedures
• appraisals of design proposals.
Client Advisers are selected by the RIBA from its membership
and are evaluated and accredited on an annual basis. The RIBA
maintains a register and provides shortlists of Client Advisers
with the most appropriate skills and experience.
Securing the commission
Although not strictly part of the Strategic Definition process,
there are some key matters to be considered in winning and
then preparing to take on a commission. These are set out in this
section of the book.
There is potential within the industry for the architect to
perform a wide variety of roles. Great care is therefore needed
to ensure that any commission is secured on the right basis – it
can no longer always be assumed that ‘the normal services will
apply’ or that there will be a common understanding between
architect and client as to what the ‘normal services’ might mean.
In any individual case the services will vary according to the
expectations and requirements of the client.
