This edition follows the new stages in the RIBA Plan of Work 2013 (reproduced
inside the back cover). The structure of the book is similar to the eighth edition,
with the chapters set out consistently, but each stage now precisely reflects the
layout of the Plan of Work. Each chapter starts with a facsimile of the relevant
stage of the Plan itself and a general description of the stage activities. The
chapters are then split into eight main sections, relating to each of the eight task
bars for each stage in the RIBA Plan of Work 2013:
1. Core Objectives
2.Procurement
3.Programme
4. (Town) Planning
5. Suggested Key Support Tasks
6. Sustainability Checkpoints
7. Information Exchanges
8. UK Government Information Exchanges
Core Objectives sets out the principal activities for each stage.
The ‘three Ps’ are a set of activities that can take place at different times depending
on the needs of the project, the approach to risk and the form of procurement.
The activities in Procurement, Programme and (Town) Planning vary widely from
project to project and so the RIBA Plan of Work 2013 allows users to generate
their own bespoke practice- or project-specific RIBA Plan of Work by selecting
from a pull-down list.
The proposed procurement route can be selected to generate a practice- or
project-specific RIBA Plan of Work that includes the specific procurement and
tendering activities required at each stage.
The procurement strategy, or certain client demands, may dictate that a number
of stages need to occur simultaneously or overlap. The Programme task bar allows
a bespoke practice- or project-specific Plan of Work to be created to illustrate
and highlight these stages. More importantly, this task bar underlines the need
for every project to have a Project Programme that sets out the durations for
each stage and any supporting activities.
The pull-down options of the (Town) Planning task bar allow the user to determine
whether the planning application will be made at the end of Stage 2 or Stage 3
