DCG Impact Review 2024 - Flipbook - Page 35
THIRTY FIVE | STRATEGIC PRIORITY THREE
“The Roundhouse is the perfect venue for this
historical announcement as it re昀氀ects Derby’s
heritage as a rail city and acknowledges our track
record and commitment to working in partnership
with a wide range of industry employers to train and
develop the skilled workforce they require both now
and in the future.
It’s full steam ahead for the reform of
our railways and this announcement
is not only a huge win for the brilliant
city of Derby, but a key milestone
for the entire rail industry across
the country. I’d like to thank DCG
for playing an important part by
hosting the announcement and
showcasing their impressive site.”
“As a College, we are integral to helping grow the
rail industry in the city as we recognise the positive
impact of creating high-quality job opportunities.”
The Rt Hon Mark Harper MP
On a tour of the Roundhouse, the Minister was
shown the site’s connections with the railway
industry both past and present. He also heard
directly from DCG students and apprentices
who explained how their study programmes had
brought them into contact with some of the UK’s
leading rail companies and suppliers.
AN ENGINE FOR GROWTH
A knowledge transfer business hub has been
established after DCG’s success in attracting
Strategic Development Fund support.
Sponsored by Fujitsu, the Engine Room at the
Roundhouse caters for employers, businesses and
civic organisations within the digital, rail, civil
engineering, construction and advanced
manufacturing sectors.
The centre is a focal point for employers to analyse,
introduce and adopt new technologies, processes
and know-how they might not have fully exploited
before – especially SMEs who could struggle to 昀椀nd
the resources and time to engage. It also paves the
way for higher level knowledge exchange with the
university sector.
Featuring a combination of large and small work
spaces, the Engine Room also provides of昀椀ce
facilities and resources to business clients, re昀氀ecting
today’s ‘nowhere of昀椀ce’ ethos and showcasing
tomorrow’s smart technology-enhanced working
environments.
In addition, it signposts employers to suitable skills
training and education, so they can build a more
昀氀exible workforce and reach out to new markets in
the post-pandemic economy.
The venture has cemented DCG’s potent alliance
with Fujitsu, which is also an anchor employer
in the new East
Midlands Institute
of Technology and
regularly runs student
projects on themes
such as the Internet
of Things.
