FIFTEEN | STRATEGIC PRIORITY ONE
STUDENTS WITH
WINNING WAYS
DCG students stand out from the crowd
for their talent and ingenuity – and the
2022/23 academic year brought yet
another roll call of honour:
The nursery was the county’s 昀椀rst forest school
when it opened in 2011, with many of its learning
activities based outdoors in the grounds of
Broom昀椀eld Hall.
Strengths highlighted in the inspection report
included:
• A highly quali昀椀ed manager and staff team
sharing a common understanding of how
children learn best
• The quality of teaching and the team’s ability
to ‘challenge and stretch’ the children’s
knowledge and skills
• The exemplary behaviour of the children
who have excellent communication skills, are
compassionate and respectful towards others,
and are extremely well prepared for school and
the next stage of their learning
The nursery employs 17 members of staff, including
those who have trained and quali昀椀ed through DCG,
and has 85 children enrolled ranging from babies
to older children.
Research recognition
Science T Level students achieved
a prestigious national award for
their investigations into different
governments’ responses to the
pandemic and the impact of
various restrictions on COVID-19
deaths. They were honoured with the
2023 Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS)
Award for Best Research Team.
Blossoming skills
Horticulture students won a
Silver Gilt Medal at Gardeners’
World Live for a captivating show
garden lauding the restoration
of the once-forgotten Wing昀椀eld
Station. The project involved a
partnership with Derbyshire Historic Buildings
Trust who are returning this Victorian gem
to its former glory.
Policing prowess
Public Services students who
have distinguished themselves
as exemplary police cadets
were honoured by Derbyshire
Constabulary and The High
Sheriff. Abi Ward was chosen
from 85 cadets to take the Police
Cadet of the Year title in 2023.
She followed in the footsteps of Luke Preston
(pictured), who received the same award the
previous year.
Bursary boost
Art Foundation Diploma student
Amy Higginbottom Cooper
received a £400 bursary from Arts
Society Derby for her imaginative
interactive work around the
theme of Sonder – a realisation
that each random stranger is living a life as
vivid and complex as our own. Her artwork was
rewarded with the Society’s annual Bryan Harris
Bursary Award.
